Tony Podesta is the latest under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to investigate possible interference in the 2016 presidential election by the Russian government.
Anonymous sources now suggest Tony Podesta, the brother of Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman John Podesta, is under investigation for dealings his Washington, D.C. lobbyist firm Podesta Group had with a Ukrainian non-profit group that sought to improve Ukraine’s image in the West. It is believed the investigation started as a fact-finding mission while investigating involvement between Paul Manafort, former campaign chairman for President Trump, and the same Ukrainian non-profit.
Manafort was hired by the non-profit, the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, and charged with leading a public relations campaign to make Europeans and Americans sympathetic to Ukraine’s position. It has been suggested by those on the far left that ECMU is funded by Russian sources.
Both Manafort and Podesta failed to properly file paperwork pertaining to the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires citizens campaigning on behalf of foreign governments to disclose their involvement to the Justice Department. Manafort and Podesta amended their paperwork after the media reported on the errors.
Mueller must now attempt to determine if the errors were made intentionally or by mistake in order to prosecute, and due to this prosecution is rare.
According to NBC News, Podesta is cooperating with Mueller’s investigation:
In a statement, a spokesman for the Podesta Group said the firm “is cooperating fully with the Special Counsel’s office and has taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms timely compliance. In all of our client engagements, the Podesta Group conducts due diligence and consults with appropriate legal experts to ensure compliance with disclosure regulations at all times — and we did so in this case.”
The Podesta Group is one of six firms under investigation by Mueller for possible improper dealings with foreign governments. One of the others, Mercury LLC, is affiliated with Manafort.
This report comes as Congress starts its investigation into the Uranium One deal, in which then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton oversaw the sale of 20 per cent of the United States’ uranium supply to the Russian backed company Uranium One.
Fox News reports that Representative Ron DeSantis believes the investigation into Clinton and those involved with the deal “could be criminal” depending on the statutes of limitations for the crimes committed.
